Our History
Kingsbury became a name in contracting in 1978, when founder Dick Kingsbury of Waitsfield, Vermont ventured on his own with nothing more than a John Deere 450 Dozer with a backhoe attachment. Kingsbury Construction quickly became a household name in The Mad River Valley, as the foremost residential excavating contractor due to his attention to detail and quality. As the company developed, Dick's wife Laura joined the company as bookkeeper and business director. As a result of rapid growth, jobs ranging from building driveways, septic systems, lot clearing and digging foundations transitioned into undertaking utility projects for local municipalities such as Waterbury, Montpelier and Burlington in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. By the late 1990’s and early 2000’s Kingsbury Construction’s professional workforce had successfully expanded to constructing roads with heavy highway projects for the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
Travis Kingsbury, son of Dick and Laura, grew up in the family business working as a laborer, equipment operator and pipe foreman. After obtaining his B.A. in Construction Management from Montana State University in 2002, Travis was employed as Project Engineer and Superintendent for Barnard Construction Company of Bozeman, MT in California, Florida and South Carolina constructing multi-million dollar dams and water distribution projects.
In the fall of 2003 this second generation joined the family business which would further enhance the Kingsbury name in the construction contracting trade. Travis immediately began assembling a solid management team as he possessed a vision for the future of the Kingsbury name. Consequently, Kingsbury Companies LLC was formed to bid and build large scale civil construction projects. From 2003 to present day the Kingsbury team has expanded and constructed large scale civil projects throughout the central and northern Vermont areas for both municipal and private entities. Since the company’s primary focus from inception has been in site work and heavy-civil construction, the addition of a strong management staff has allowed them to break into the General Contracting market.
